Saving For the WWW
Open an image. The file size for this image is 53.3 KB. View the image description:
To save your image for the World Wide Web, that is, to have the same quality but smaller size for dial-up users on the Net, press CNTL+ALT+SHIFT+S or from your navigation, click on File >> Save for Web...

From the "Present" box area, select your format (mine is a JPEG file) and select your choice of the quality of the image. You will see in the image beside the present box that when you select "low" the colours begin to fade (less colours=less quality). I selected "Maximum" for the highest possible quality of the image, and what do you know, the size is automatically smaller. Take a look at the image: . Before when I saved the image from "Save as..." it was 53.3 KB, now it is 21.06 KB!
That is all, after you select Save, it's already given what to do. Save the image in the desired folder to be saved in, and you're done; VOILA!

Here're some exceptions though:
If the image you opened on step 1 was a bad quality image, or was saved from the "Save as..." and you chose a low-quality image option, then when you resave is for "save for web..." it would be a bigger file (depends on the situation).
But why is it smaller when I save it "for the web"? This is because Photoshop already has this function designed especially for the images you save because we all know and want high-quality images, but with a smaller size, right? It takes a really long time for those with dial-up and slow internet connections, and we want our images to be accessible for everyone. Photoshop deletes the ruffled edges/colours, and thus, the image doesn't look much different from the original.
Take a look at these two images, from the original to after I saved it as for the WWW:

Not much of a difference is there?

Hope you find this useful.
